What is a savannah cat?
The savannah cat is a relatively new cat breed gaining recognition during the late 1990s. Savannah cats are the result of a captive breed exotic African serval cat crossed with a domestic cat. Breeders are dedicated to the development of a sweet, family friendly yet exotic looking spotted savannah cat. Savannah cats should have marbled and rosetted coat patterns. The first documented savannah cat was produced in the 1980's by Judee Frank.

What should a savannah cat look like?
Savannah cats should resemble its serval cat ancestor. Being tall, leggy, some what muscular yet having a grace to it's movement. A Savannah cats's body structure varies with different generations due to the genes variations in domestic foundation cats. The savannah cat gene pool includes but not limited to Egyptian maus, Bengal, Oriental short hair, American shorthair, Abyssinian, Pixis, Ocicat, and Domestic shorthaired cats.

Where are savannah cats registered?
Savannah cats are registered with TICA. Only "C" level or "SBT" level savannah cats can be shown at TICA cat shows. "SBT" level cats are considered purbred savannah cats. Recognition must go to Lorre Smith who was the first TICA savannah cat breed chairman. Her dedication and efforts get savannah cats moving forward in TICA. Because of Lorre Smith savannah cats have moved more rapidly than any other breed in TICA history.

What to look for in a savannah kitten?
Savannah kittens come in many colors and personalities. A new kitten buyer should look for a breeder who provided immunized kittens that are litter box trained and well treated.
